Here's a small 'hawker centre,' a place to get a cheap and delicious meal. Typically there will be tables in the center and food stalls around the outside edges, each an independent business. You can usually find lots of Chinese, Peranakan and Malaysian, and often Japanese food. Satay, laksa, chicken-rice, dumplings, fish balls and whatnot are ubiquitous and Halal mutton dishes, bento boxes with rice and teriyaki chicken or fish and all sorts of soups are easy to find too, plus all sorts of things that I don't know about yet. I was buying enticing-sounding drinks for the kids (coconut, prune etc.) but the flavors were a little too unusual for a thirsty kid and so for now we stick with water or 'lime' (-ade). I passed on the 'white fungus' flavor but might have to give it a try later. Beer is everywhere, although highly taxed; Tiger is the local lager and for $$ you can get Guinness foreign extra. Wine is even more highly taxed (about S$10 per liter).
