Any time we were ashore, each boat was tied to a bush, rock, chock or stake, and all the boats were tied together. Because big sand buildups and thus good camps seem to be in large eddies, we usually tied up for the night in an calm eddy, but there were places especially for day hikes where we tied up in the current. When we went on hikes at least one guide always stayed with the boats.
My father did all the hikes he could - he is strong and fit, but not as agile as he once was, and thus he was forbidden by all the Carter girls from doing any scrambling or anything dangerous.
